Library Details:

Our church library is housed in two different rooms. The bulk of the collection, containing books and audiovisual items for adults is housed in room 1 (marked with a "Library" sign) which is located off the church foyer. The childrens' books, audiovisual items and teacher workbooks are in the teacher's workroom located across from the nursery before the beginning of the classroom hallway.

The library (room 1) contains a card catalog and a computer catalog which house information for the items in both rooms. Lists of newly added books which may not have yet been included in the catalogs can be found by the door in the library. In addition, the teacher's workroom contains printed title, subject and author lists fastened to a bulletin board in the workroom. These lists show information only about the books located within that room.

Both rooms are set up on a self help basis. There is a library card and pocket in each item. The card can be signed, dated and left in the check out box in either room. When items are returned, they can be placed in the book deposit bin in either room. It's as easy as that! If further explanations of the library or teacher's workroom is needed, please contact the church office (270-651-8501) to set up an appointment with a librarian.

Dewey Decimal Classification System:

Our church library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification System to organize its books. This is the system used by most public libraries and school libraries. Most of the books with Dewey numbers will be located in the church library. However, any book whose classification number is preceded by a "T", "J" or "E" will be located in the teacher workroom.

The Dewey Decimal System, using numbers and letters, coordinates materials on the same subject and on related subjects to make items easier to find on the shelves. The system progresses from the general to the specific. All knowledge is divided into ten main general classes. The below table lists these general classes.

NumberDescription
000Generalities
100Philosophy & Psychology
200Religion
300Social Science
400Language
500Natural Science & Mathematics
600Technology (Applied Sciences)
700Arts
800Literature
900Geography & History

Of course, our church library consists mainly of religious books, all classified in the 200 area of Dewey. As an example, we have included the below table which lists some of the common 200 area Dewey numbers. Though this list doesn't contain every 200 number used in our church library, it will help you see how the 200 section of Dewey is divided into more specific subjects. It also matches the labels used on our church library shelves.
